We\u2019re all born with a pure heart \u2014 call it the soul, or call it our Buddha-nature if that suits you better. In Japanese Zen, it\u2019s called jish\u014d \u2014 one\u2019s true nature. And when we come into this world, that nature is spotless, like a freshly washed window. Crystal clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But life happens. And little by little, that window gets fogged up.
Not always on purpose. But slowly, surely, it clouds over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Modern life, bless its heart, is full of things that fog up the soul \u2014 noise, screens, hurry, fear, and the belief that being angry is the same as being important.
Take a look around \u2014 a whole lot of people are walking around with fogged-up windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You see it in the ones who lash out online \u2014 anonymous avatars hurling insults like monkeys with keyboards. Social media becomes a big stick for small minds. \u201cThe food was terrible.\u201d \u201cThey wouldn\u2019t let my dog into the restaurant.\u201d \u201cThe server didn\u2019t smile enough.\u201d So they explode \u2014 not just at the place, but at the whole world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They think they\u2019re right. Absolutely, unquestionably right.
So right, they push the emergency stop button on a train because the conductor didn\u2019t show up fast enough.
They lick the chopsticks at a sushi conveyor belt and laugh about it.
They eat all the garlic at the ramen shop \u2014 all of it \u2014 and then post a video like they\u2019ve done something brave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It\u2019s like jumping into a piranha lake with open wounds and wondering why you got bitten.
And sure enough, the backlash comes \u2014 public scolding, legal trouble, embarrassment.
But it doesn\u2019t stop. Why? Because someone \u2014 somewhere \u2014 still clicks \u201cLike.\u201d
That\u2019s how far the soul can fog over.<\/p>\n\n\n

But here\u2019s the good news: no one is born that way.
Not one angry troll or selfish customer came into the world snarling and bitter.
They were all babies once \u2014 soft, small, helpless, and pure.
Look at a baby. Any baby. There are no twisted souls behind those eyes. Just innocence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But as we grow, life writes all over that blank page. And some of us forget to clean the window.
Desire smudges it. Disappointment splashes mud. Ego leaves greasy fingerprints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That\u2019s why we have to check in on ourselves.
Pause when we\u2019re angry. Ask if the outrage is justified or just convenient.
Stop when we crave something weird \u2014 like licking a soy sauce bottle \u2014 and ask: What need am I really trying to fill here?
Breathe. Ask: Is my soul fogged up right now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because if you notice, you can clean it.
That\u2019s the whole trick.
Just notice \u2014 and rinse it off. Reflection is the soap.
Regret, humility, apology \u2014 those are the warm water and towel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your true nature is still there. Underneath it all, it\u2019s still white, still pure, still yours.
So check it now and then.
Wipe the window. Keep your soul clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
