Zen is hard. And Zen words? Even harder.
So I go ahead and make up my own meanings\u2014and I like them just fine.I like to think that Master Huineng, D\u014dgen, Ikky\u016b, and Ry\u014dkan would nod gently and say, \u201cThat’s fine. That’s fine. Let it be, my friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today’s Zen word is “\u660e\u73e0\u5728\u638c Meishu tanagokoro ni ari” It means “The pearls (Buddha-nature) is in the palm “<\/p>\n\n\n

The bright pearl lies in your palm.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cbright pearl\u201d is your true nature \u2014 your Buddha nature.
There\u2019s an old Zen text from the Song Dynasty called the Blue Cliff Record<\/em>, which says,
\u201cThe bright pearl of praj\u00f1\u0101 wisdom is in my very palm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That wisdom \u2014 praj\u00f1\u0101 \u2014 is the ability to see things as they really are:
Impermanent. Unsatisfactory. Not self.
And that bright pearl? It\u2019s already in everyone\u2019s hand.
We\u2019re all born with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But to realize<\/em> it, to truly awaken that wisdom?
That\u2019s hard.
It takes practice. Discipline. Reflection.
And maybe a little bit of letting go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because without some preparation, some training, having all the wisdom in the universe might just break you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember that Soviet officer, Irina Spalko, from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/em>?
She begged the aliens, \u201cI want to know everything.\u201d
And when they granted her wish, it overwhelmed her.
She screamed, \u201cStop! I can\u2019t take it!\u201d
That\u2019s what happens when you try to carry the weight of infinite truth with untrained arms.
Wisdom without grounding is no gift. It\u2019s a fire.<\/p>\n\n\n

You already have the bright pearl.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But there\u2019s another kind of bright pearl:
The quiet seed of Buddha-nature we each carry.
The potential for compassion, clarity, and joy.
If we can realize that, even just a little, we can be free.
Free from anger. Free from fear. Free from the endless itch of \u201cnot enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You already have the bright pearl.
Everyone does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still think you\u2019ve got nothing?
No talents, no wealth, no lucky breaks?
\u201cBad roll of the dice,\u201d you say. \u201cLost the parent lottery.\u201d
You feel like a loser in love, a failure at life.
You look at others and see all they have.
And you just want to scream, or maybe tear them down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But are you sure you have nothing<\/em>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s check.
Do you have a body that moves and breathes?
A friend who still says hello with a smile, even when you\u2019re being difficult?
A partner who makes you coffee when you come home late?
Look again.
Even if you haven\u2019t noticed, your life is quietly blooming with kindness.
And you \u2014 yes, you<\/em> \u2014 still smile, now and then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That smile?
That\u2019s your pearl.
That\u2019s your Buddha-nature, shining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pearl may be invisible, but that doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not there.
It\u2019s always there \u2014 gleaming softly in the palm of your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n

Paradise is a hanging thing above your eyebrows, and you don’t find it very close.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Zen master D\u014dgen once said,
\u201cParadise is like something dangling above your eyebrows \u2014 too close to see.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, what\u2019s most precious is so close, we miss it entirely.
Your Buddha-nature, your bright pearl, it\u2019s right there in your palm.
But to really see it, you need to look<\/em>.
No need to sit under waterfalls or walk barefoot on mountain trails like a monk.
Just open your hand.
Imagine the pearl.
Believe that it\u2019s there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And maybe, just maybe, your heart will feel a little lighter, a little clearer.
That\u2019s where the practice begins.<\/p>\n\n\n
