Today is “\u5999\u624b\u591a\u5b50\u7121\u3057 Myoushu tashinasi”It means “There is no easy way to live a better life.<\/span>“<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No Clutter in a Masterstroke<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a phrase from the old Zen texts”Hekiganroku”\u2014\u201cMy\u014dshu tashi nashi.\u201dIt doesn\u2019t roll off the tongue, and it sure doesn\u2019t explain itself. But like a good cup of coffee, it sticks with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the world of Japanese Go or Shogi\u2014the strategy games where silence is thick.\u2014a \u201cmy\u014dshu\u201d is a brilliant move. One of those strokes that seems effortless, almost accidental, and yet somehow wins the whole board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTashi\u201d means mess, clutter, noise\u2014the kind of extra stuff that makes things complicated.So when they say \u201c(Tashi nashi) a masterstroke has no clutter,\u201d what they mean is:The best moves are clean. Clear. Simple. Nothing extra.It\u2019s not that they\u2019re small. It\u2019s that they\u2019re right.<\/p>\n\n\n

Rinzai Zenji and Obaku Zenji<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Now let me tell you a story\u2014one of those Zen tales that doesn\u2019t exactly wrap itself up in a bow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zen Master Rinzai is the founder of the Rinzai sect.When Zen Master Rinzai was young, a senior monk encouraged him to go to train under Zen Master Obaku.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now Obaku wasn\u2019t your gentle, nodding, tea-sipping kind of Zen teacher. He was \u2026 an intense person. Rinzai, nervous and uncertain, ask the senior monk,”What question do i”: The senior monk answer\u3000\u201cWhat\u2019s the most important part of the Buddha\u2019s teaching?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He bowed, stepped forward before Obaku.He started to speak.\u201cWhat\u2019s the most important part of the Buddha\u2019s teaching?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And before he could finish the sentence, WHACK.
Obaku smacked him with a stick and threw him out.
Rinzai was stunned. What just happened?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tried again.
Same question, same answer\u2014WHACK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A third time. This time, he was struck the moment before he opened his mouth. WHACK.At this point, he was utterly lost.Today we\u2019d probably call this power harassment. Back then, they just called it Zen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Rinzai went back to his own teacher, Daigu, and asked,
\u201cWhat is this?\u201d
And Daigu said:
\u201cHow kind Obaku is. He\u2019s exhausted himself for your sake.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And just like that, the light came on.
Rinzai got it.Obaku\u2019s teaching had no clutter.
No explanations. No philosophy.
Because the most important part of the Buddha\u2019s path\u2026 is not something you ask about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Zen, it’s not good to get caught up in the interpretation of words.
You have to understand the meaning intuitively.
Obaku taught not with words, but through the pain of being hit.<\/p>\n\n\n

“Tashi nashi” is simple without impurities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There\u2019s a phrase in Zen:
\u201cTashi nashi.\u201dis Just the thing itself.

It sounds simple. But simple things have depth\u2014like water, or silence, or a really good cup of tea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And speaking of good things\u2014let me tell you what Zhuangzi, the old Chinese sage, once said:
\u201cThe friendship of the noble is like water\u2014clear, cool, and light. The friendship of the petty is like sweet wine\u2014sticky, rich, and intoxicating.\u201d
Now, here\u2019s the thing about really good wine:
It doesn\u2019t give you a headache.
Because the best wine is clean\u2014no additives, no junk, no hangover.
Same with people.
The best relationships?
They\u2019re not loud. They\u2019re not filled with drama or sugarcoated flattery.
They\u2019re just\u2026 there. Like water. Simple. Quiet. Reliable.
